Free Tax Preparation - Volunteer Income Tax Assistance

 

Make up to (not over) $64,000 a year? Get your taxes done for free!

From late January until Tax Day (April 15, 2024), FREE TAX PREPARATION will be available for households earning up to (not over) $64,000 at VITA sites across Denton County thanks to our Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.

What do I need to get my tax return prepared for free?

You will need to bring the following documents with you to our sites. If you don't know if you should bring a document, bring it just in case.

In addition, please check for the following:

 

Public Health Precautions - Due to the spread of respiratory diseases in our community, we support participants wearing of masks while participating in free tax preparation. We thank you for taking the necessary precautions to protect taxpayers, volunteers, and staff alike during cold, flu, RSV, and COVID season.

 

We will offer Free Tax preparation beginning January 22, 2024 and concluding on Tax Day, April 15, 2024.

Each year, we partner with host sites across the county to provide free tax preparation. During the 2024 Tax Season, we will operate sites on a weekly basis at the following locations. Check back for updates on additional sites or site closures due to inclement / severe weather or other safety concerns:

You can file an extension using MyFreeTaxes.com which will extend your deadline until October 15, 2024. Note: you MUST calculate any taxes OWED and pay them by the April 15 deadline. If you owe taxes and do not pay by the April filing deadline, the IRS will charge you interest each month on the amount you owe until you file and pay. 

Information you need: 

  • W-2 (Box 2) 
  • 1099-R (Box 4)
  • Anything with “Federal Withholdings” 

Step-By-Step:

  1. Go to MyFreeTaxes.com
  2. Indicate that you would like to “File My Own Taxes”
  3. Answer these questions:
    1. “Did you earn less than $79,000 in 2023?”
    2. “What is your ZIP code?”
    3. “Do you have income from self-employment?”
  4. Press the “File now” yellow button
  5. Once you get to “Welcome to the TaxSlayer VITA/TCE self-prep kiosk”, Login or create an account on TaxSlayer
  6. Begin a return
  7. Click on the grey question mark in the top right corner 
  8. Type in “Extension”
  9. Click on “Go to Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return now” under files.

Virtual services are not being offered at this time.

VITA volunteers are not trained to prepare state income taxes. Most states have a website where you can access state income tax filing information or electronically file your state tax return.

If you earn too much to use our services, you may still be eligible to try preparing your taxes for free yourself at MyFreeTaxes.com

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance is a free tax preparation service provided by United Way of Denton County in partnership with: City of Denton, City of Lewisville, City of Pilot Point, City of Sanger, CTDI, Denton Public Library, Lewisville Public Library, Little Elm Public Library, Pilot Point Community Library, Sanger Public Library, Texas Woman’s University, Town of Little Elm, and University of North Texas.
