Interns are an integral part of our team at United Way of Denton County. With close staff supervision, interns are highly involved in all aspects and levels of our organization, learning crucial skills, earning valuable experience, and developing a robust network of contacts to help them as they develop into professionals. Below are some of the internships we feature as part of our team.

Marketing & Communications Interns

Communications & Public Relations

Assists Director of Communications/Marketing in planning, development, and execution of marketing, communications and public relations strategies in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.

Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):

  • Produce, write, and edit content for e-newsletter, annual report, media alerts, press releases, website
  • Donor communications & relations
  • Curating and publishing social media content
  • Photo & Video capturing and editing
  • Event planning and management
  • Work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole
  • Other duties as assigned such as mailings, supplies and facilities management, and preparation for meetings

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 5:00pm)

Expected Hours per Week: 10-20 hours

Qualifications: Strong writing and editing skills; proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; strong creative skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, computer savvy with a working knowledge of social media. Photography and videography skills a plus; proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite 5.0 or later preferred.

Graphic Design

Assists Director of Marketing/Communications in planning, development, and execution of marketing collateral, infographics, social graphics, website graphics, and email design in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.

Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):

  • E-Newsletter design
  • Brochures, Posters, Flyer Designs
  • Infographic Design
  • Sponsorship catalog design
  • Print advertisements
  • Website and social media graphics
  • HTML
  • Photo & Video capturing and editing
  • Work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole
  • Other duties as assigned 

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 5:00pm)

Expected Hours per Week: 10-20 hours

Qualifications: Well-versed in Adobe Creative Suite Creative (InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Knowledge of Premiere and/or After Effects a plus), strong creative skills, highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines, computer savvy with a working knowledge of Microsoft Office and social media. Photography and videography skills a plus.

Video Production

Assists Director of Marketing/Communications in planning, development, and creation of promotional videos as part of the organization's overall marketing, communications and public relations strategies in support of UWDC community impact and resource development efforts. Under the supervision of Director of Marketing & Communications with 25+ years in corporate and nonprofit CSR. This is a valuable internship with extensive opportunity for hands-on learning to build your skills and portfolio. Routine feedback provided with weekly meetings and evaluation.

Specific assignments/roles may be assigned in any of the following areas (depending on schedule and tenure):

 

  • Editing of existing Campaign video footage for production of vignettes for website and social media
  • Video Compilation and Editing for UNITED Tribute Gala and other special events

 

As needed, Marketing, Communications & Public Relations Interns may also be assigned to work collaboratively with multiple departments on projects or events that benefit the organization as a whole.

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 5:00pm)

Social Media

Community Impact & Program Initiatives Internships

Social Work Interns, Behavioral Health, Health Studies, Public Health, Nonprofit Leadership

UWDC has many placements available to both BS and MS students. United Way of Denton County is a unique placement that provides opportunities for students to gain community, macro-level experience while also gaining experience on the micro, one-on-one level. Students have an opportunity to apply their classroom teaching to all levels of social work practice and have hands on understanding of the various effects the intersecting levels of practice have on each other. Most of United Way of Denton County's work is on the macro level, be aware that micro-only opportunities vary each semester. Please refer to the list below for the current opportunities available.

Information & Referral Intern

As an Information and Referral Intern, you will answer the United Way of Denton County helpline and greet anyone who walks in the door looking for help. Your main job responsibilities will involve connecting people in crisis with the help they need to get back on their feet. This internship places heavy emphasis on people-skills, interaction with people in crisis or need, and the ability to ethically empathize with someone who may be from a far different background.

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (8:00am - 5:00pm)

Expected Hours per Week: Flexible

Qualifications: Proficiency with Microsoft Office suite; Spanish proficiency prioritized

Community Impact/Nonprofit Management Intern

The Non-Profit Management Intern will gain experience in programs and activities that support overall non-profit capacity building in both United Way of Denton County and in other local non-profits. This internship may include varying components depending on the semester, number of hours required by the student, previous experience, school major, and length of internship (ie: one semester vs. two semesters). This internship includes the coordination and logistical management for multiple programs, including:

  • Community Needs Assessment (Fall, Spring, and Summer) - gathering and presenting secondary data, planning and conducting focus groups/community conversations, surveys
  • Community Services Directory (Fall, Spring, and Summer) - updating and publishing the annual directory of services in Denton County
  • Board Leadership Institute: Board Leadership Training (Summer and Fall only) - logistical lead on the board member training program
  • Grant Management (Fall and Spring only) - supporting the Community Investment Grant Review process for outgoing grants
 

Expected Work Schedule: Monday - Friday standard office hours (8:00am - 5:00pm); some evenings for trainings and optional remote work for needs assessment

Expected Hours per Week: Minimum of 20, depending on focus

Qualifications: Undergraduate or Graduate, proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, highly organized, attention to detail, self-motivated.

Education & Workforce Initiatives:
Workforce Success Leadership Team Intern

Apply your collaborative skillset to a position that supports the Workforce Success Leadership Team.

Current initiatives include:

Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Intern

A VITA intern will, with training, gain IRS tax law certification, then train, supervise, and support volunteers as they prepare taxes free of charge for low- and moderately low-income households. Manage the administrative logistics of running a fast-paced VITA site with potentially up to 12 volunteers.

  • With training, gain IRS-certification in tax law
  • Train volunteers to prepare simple tax returns
  • Supervise the day-to-day operation of tax preparation sites
  • Assist in preparation of returns as necessary
  • Ensure that tax preparation sites meet all federal rules and regulations
  • Maintain reporting records and statistics for tax preparation sites
  • Other tax preparation-related duties as assigned

Expected Work Schedule: Afternoons, evenings and weekends for training in the Fall semester and site supervision in the Spring semester

Expected Hours per Week: 10-25 hours per week in Fall semester, 25-40 hours per week in Spring semester

Homelessness Leadership Team Intern

Apply your collaborative skillset to an applied position that supports the Homelessness Leadership Team.

Development Interns

 
Campaign Intern - State Employee Charitable Campaign (SECC)
The SECC is an annual state supported workplace campaign that runs from September through October. State employees are encouraged to donate to an approved nonprofit, and United Way of Denton County oversees and processes those donations on behalf of the designated agencies. In January of each year we begin distributing those funds to nonprofits across the state. At the same time, applicants for the next year’s campaign are submitted to United Way for an extensive grant review process. This is an excellent opportunity to gain a broad understanding of state-wide nonprofits and an in-depth knowledge of agencies in our immediate area. This intern will help:
  • Manage SECC starting with the distribution of charitable donations
  • Aid in the processing of grants 
  • Review applications to determine eligibility for participation in the next campaign.

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 4:00pm)

Expected Hours per Week: 5-20 hours

Qualifications: data entry, detail-oriented, highly organized, proficient editor, able to prioritize and meet deadlines.

Grant Writing Intern
This position assists the resource development team with identifying potential funders, writing LOIs, and drafting grant proposals. Knowledge of grant writing is required. Applicants should have excellent grammar, writing, editing, research, and organization skills. Applicants should also be familiar with all the components of a grant proposal. Grant writing experience is preferred.

Expected Work Schedule: Standard office hours (9:00am - 4:00pm)

Expected Hours per Week: 5-20 hours
